How this Dutch man became the Hantavirus ‘Patient Zero’, and how his passion for birds turned into a fatal outbreak

A Dutch ornithologist, Leo Schilperoord, is identified as the “Patient Zero” of a fatal Hantavirus outbreak that began on the cruise ship MV Hondius. His passion for rare birds led to exposure at an Argentinian landfill. Tragically, his wife, Mirjam, also died while attempting to return home after his death.
