Amazon MGM Studios has dropped “Artificial,” Luca Guadagnino’s nearly finished, roughly $40 million biopic starring Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, and will shop it to rival studios. The retreat follows Amazon’s $50 billion investment in OpenAI, struck in February. The film, which dramatizes Altman’s 2023 firing and rehiring, reportedly portrays him and Elon Musk unsympathetically. Despite positive test screenings, Amazon says “Artificial” would be “better served” elsewhere, leaving its conflict of interest unspoken.
