Australian scientists are employing a novel, non-lethal strategy to safeguard native freshwater turtles from predatory red foxes. By using decoy eggs laced with a nausea-inducing compound and a vanilla scent, they aim to condition foxes to associate the aroma with sickness, deterring them from turtle nests. This behavioural approach, combined with physical barriers like floating islands, shows significant promise in preventing the extinction of these reptiles.
