On San Miguel and Santa Rosa islands, the island fox population faced a dire threat of extinction due to predation by golden eagles. The successful removal of these eagles, combined with dedicated captive breeding and habitat restoration programs, allowed the foxes to make a remarkable recovery. As a result, these subspecies were ultimately delisted from the endangered species list.
