Lucknow’s rise as a capital began with Asaf-ud-Daula, building on its economic importance established by Saadat Khan. Saadat Khan developed key areas like Panch Mahalla and organized “ganj” markets. Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula further enhanced Panch Mahalla, renaming it Machchi Bhawan. By 1765, Lucknow was a significant town with thriving trade and industries.
