Gateshead uses 150m-deep mine water to heat 350 homes and public buildings

Water from deep beneath Gateshead now heats hundreds of homes and buildings. A six-megawatt heat pump extracts warmth from mine water, feeding a district network. This system, the largest of its kind in Great Britain, became operational in March 2023. Over five kilometers of pipes distribute the heated water to various public and private properties. Researchers are studying the mine water system through the Gateshead Living Laboratory.
