In 1949, two Canadian animators painted jazz directly onto 35mm film, and the Oscar Peterson Trio’s music became a swirl of colour, rhythm and motion

Canadian artists McLaren and Lambart created Begone Dull Care in 1949. They painted and scratched directly onto film to visualise jazz music. This direct animation technique became a visual interpretation of the Oscar Peterson Trio’s performance. The film proved animation could represent sound and inspired many artists. Begone Dull Care remains an influential example of experimental animation today.
