NCRB: West Bengal’s jails house the most foreigners

Bengal houses the highest number of foreign prisoners in India, with 2,508 inmates, primarily Bangladeshis detained for illegal entry. These foreigners constitute 9% of the state’s total prison population, contributing to severe overcrowding at 120% occupancy. Low deportation rates and a large shared border exacerbate the issue, with many being undertrials.
