The US National Science Foundation has awarded $20 million to PoLARIS, an AI-powered robotic laboratory built by the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. More than 20 autonomous stations across five labs will let researchers anywhere in the country design and run soft materials experiments remotely, over the cloud. Once operational, PoLARIS is expected to handle 100 to 300 experiments a day, with outside projects accepted by year two.
