Up to 1,000 elephants climb Tanzania’s 6,500-foot Udzungwa Mountains; 529 recorded using a new 14-km protected wildlife corridor linking their historic habitats with Nyerere National Park across the Kilombero Valley

Up to 1,000 African savanna elephants move through Tanzania’s Udzungwa Mountains and surrounding habitats, with some climbing slopes above 6,500 feet. A newly protected 14-kilometre wildlife corridor across the Kilombero Valley reconnects their historic range. Camera traps recorded 529 elephants among 1,440 mammals using the corridor during 15 months of monitoring.
