Apple has had no design chief since Jony Ive left, so CEO John Ternus is doing the job himself

Apple CEO John Ternus has made himself the company’s de facto design chief, a role left vacant since Jony Ive’s exit in 2019. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Ternus works hands-on in the design studio several times a week, while Tim Cook visited about once a month. Apple is not hiring an outside design head, and is instead rebuilding its industrial and software design teams ahead of new launches.
