In 1904, work began on a 21-km railway from Neral to Matheran after Mumbai businessman invested Rs 16 lakh; workers carved route by hand

Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy initiated the Neral-Matheran narrow-gauge railway construction. This challenging 21-km line was built by hand through steep terrain. Four German steam engines powered the trains from 1907 until 1982. Peerbhoy also developed accommodation and facilities to encourage visitors. This historic mountain railway remains a significant heritage attraction today.
