New cat species discovered after 100 years: How the tiny, spotted tilcayo differs from your house cat

After being largely ignored, the small wild cat known as Leopardus tilcayo has finally gained scientific recognition. This distinct tiger-cat species makes its home within Bolivia’s lush Yungas cloud forest. Genetic studies show that this creature has had its own unique evolutionary path for about 1.4 million years. Weighing in at just three pounds, it was frequently misidentified as a different species.
