Shakespeare’s Globe to replace 30-year-old roof with 14,000 reed bundles in £10m project

Shakespeare’s Globe in London is set for a major roof replacement nearly 30 years after the reconstructed theatre opened. The £10 million project will use traditional thatching and around 14,000 bundles of reed instead of modern roofing materials. The Globe’s original roof used 6,000 bundles of Norfolk reeds. The project comes as traditional thatching in England faces challenges including poor harvests, old machinery and uncertain seasonal labour supplies.
