West Bengal bans political activities by school staff; teachers’ salary hikes, promotions may depend on students’ performance

The West Bengal government plans to prohibit teaching and non-teaching staff in government and government-aided schools from engaging in political activities. It is also considering linking teachers’ annual increments and promotions to students’ academic progress. Other proposals include a single-teacher arrangement for primary classes and the possible restoration of the pass-fail system in schools.
