Supreme Court quashes rape case arising from three-year consensual relationship, says criminal prosecution cannot be used as strong-arm tactic

A Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran observed that the material on record did not disclose criminal culpability on the part of the appellant, Martanda Singh, and cautioned that a criminal prosecution cannot be used as a means to compel a person to marry. The Court was hearing an appeal arising from proceedings registered pursuant to FIR No.191 of 2025 at Sirgitti Police Station, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.
